Silver Lake’s New Craft Beer and Pizza Hangout Offers a Mellow Neighborhood Vibe

Silver Lake’s churning restaurant scene continues to make waves this week as the brand new California Sun settles in. The big corner restaurant comes from the Artisanal Brewers Collective, meaning there will be lots of craft beer and casual fare ready for an opening on February 11.

California Sun takes over where the short-lived Mixed Company left off a year ago. At the time, the patio-heavy, sunlight-drenched Mixed Co. hoped to become a kind of stepped-back Gjusta, with pastries and breads and salads and sandwiches all made in house. But when the restaurant folded less than ten months along, Tony Yanow and the ABC group stepped in to take control.

Now the menu is rich with garlicky pizzas, grab-and-go meals, and six packs of beer or wines by the can. There are over 100 different beer options on the menu, as well as both thin and thick-crust pizzas boasting plenty with rather unique toppings like a taco pie that comes with refried beans, black olives, and an avocado crema. And, this being ABC (in Silver Lake no less), expect a slew of vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes as well.

Inside California Sun, the room has been reformatted to feel even more casual. There are now old-school diner-style stuffed barstools inside, scooped plastic school chairs at an upstairs private dining room, and loads of wooden tables both inside and out for groups of any size. The majority of the seating resides on the shaded patio.

California Sun opens on Monday, February 11, keeping daily hours (Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday until midnight. Saturday they run 10 a.m. to midnight, and Sundays operate from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
