Sugar rush

Astro Doughnuts is opening today in Santa Monica, and to get the party started the company is doing a variety of different giveaways. First up: Anyone who rolls through will be able to get a free doughnut to try, and there will also be special “golden doughnuts” once per hour (they’re filled inside with an edible gold, but will look the same on the outside) that entitle the winner to a year of free doughnuts. Not bad. 2309 Main St., Santa Monica.

The bagels are back

There’s another bagel pop-up happening this weekend at Yarrow Cafe on Fairfax. The collaboration with WhiteBark Workwear was a massive hit last time, so best to arrive early for this one.

Food programming

The LA Times Festival of Books returns April 13 and 14 at USC, and with the annual event comes a variety of on-site food programming. That includes cooking demos from Marge Manzke, talks with chefs and cookbook authors, and more.

A new use?

LA’s oldest museum, the Southwest Museum, could be getting a pretty serious upgrade if its current caretakers get their way. The Autry Museum of the American West owns the aging property in Mt. Washington, but are looking for either outright buyers or partners to help reshape the space, either with lots of retrofitting and new creative uses or as part of a new commercial enterprise that would include restaurant and retail components, reports LA Times.

Coming in

Casual cafe spot Comoncy has landed its fourth local location. This one sits at a busy intersection along West Third Street, and will feature a large front patio and full dinner menu as well. Expect an opening this summer at 8201 W. 3rd St.

Opening now

La Fruteria opens tomorrow at Grand Central Market. The casual stall offers sweet and spicy fruit and drinks, and comes from Fernando Villagomez of fellow GCM stand Villa Moreliana.
