Sqirl chef/owner Jessica Koslow just can’t seem to stay out of the news. The busy jam-maker and mega-successful restaurant owner is back with a long-awaited announcement on her casual takeaway spot Sqirl Away, set to open in buzzy East Hollywood.

For a while, the plan with Sqirl Away was to open right next door to Sqirl proper in Virgil Village. It was envisioned as a way for customers to grab and go with some of the tiny restaurant’s more common offerings, be they packaged goods like coffee or jam, or simple items like toast and the sorrel pesto rice bowls. That space never came together for customer use, though; it was instead commissioned as overflow storage and prep space for Sqirl itself, with its own kitchen build-out.

So now Sqirl Away is back at a new address on Vermont Avenue, across the street from LA City College and around the corner from the just-opened-today new version of Baroo. Koslow dropped the news on her personal Instagram last night:

As the post notes, the new plan is to open Sqirl Away this fall, following in the same footsteps as Sqirl itself while also offering a slightly more expanded and dedicated new menu. There’s no word yet on the size of the space or the layout or anything, but it looks like in 2019 Sqirl Away is officially happening.

Meanwhile, Koslow just got shortlisted for a James Beard Foundation Award, and is in the process of opening up a different restaurant altogether out in Santa Monica with chef Gabriela Camara of Mexico City’s Contramar. It’s shaping up to be a busy year.
