One of LA’s most celebrated bartenders, Ruben Rueda of Musso & Frank, has died. The longtime red-coated cocktail maker loved to wax poetic about his past customers, including regulars like Charles Bukowski and Gore Vidal. He had worked at the seminal Hollywood restaurant for more than 50 years.
Barbecue summers
Hyperion Public in Studio City is launching a new springtime barbecue initiative, starting this weekend. Running every Wednesday and Saturday through the summer, the restaurant is wheeling out its smoker onto the patio to cook up brisket, ribs, and more for dinner, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The first night kicks off on Saturday, May 4.
Pre-show meal
Atrium in Los Feliz is doing a new faster-paced meal option for those on their way to the Greek Theatre this summer. The 60-minute pre-show menu runs three courses for $35 a head, and includes options like the dry aged hanger steak with sorbet for dessert. A three-course wine pairing can be had as well for an additional $15 a head.
Open for business
Cal Mare is open for lunch now at the Beverly Center. The coastal Italian spot from the chef Michael Mina universe is doing pizzas, pasta, seafood and more from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
Gold’s legacy
Jonathan Gold posthumously won a ninth James Beard Foundation Award over the weekend at the annual media gala held in New York City. The late Gold, who died last summer at the age of 57 from cancer, was honored with the Craig Claiborne Distinguished Restaurant Review Award, reports the LA Times.
Samin Nosrat
Author and food television personality Samin Nosrat is coming to Orange County this summer for a private cooking class and book signing. The June 30 class goes down at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, and raises money for the non-profit. Tickets are $1,000 a pop as a result, though the book signing is only $50.
Brunch run
The Milky Way is launching brunch in Pico-Robertson. The classic Kosher restaurant will still be closed on Saturday in observance of Shabbat, but will keep hours starting this weekend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
