The legendary L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele finally opens its doors on May 9, but there’s far more than expected from this well-known Naples-based pizzeria. While the restaurant will churn out its traditional Neapolitan pies next Thursday, Antica is set to wow this part of town with a spacious patio, stunning interior, and a coastal Italian menu slated for late-May.

Antica Pizzeria The spot is hidden behind a tall crop of trees on McCadden just north of Sunset, and one block east of Highland in the former Cafe des Artistes space. Its arrival will be a welcome addition to a neighborhood.

Pizzas will be cooked in one minute, including a margherita pizza topped with tomato, fior di latte cheese, pecorino, and basil. There’s a traditional marinara pie that happens to be vegan with tomato sauce, oregano, and garlic, as well as a deep-fried pizza, and pizza bianca. It’s all made by a three to four-person team in a glass-encased room by the patio.

Owner Francesco Zimone built most of the restaurant’s modern touches by hand, then hired Amalfi-born Antonio Giordano to produce the rest of the forthcoming Mediterranean menu. Giordano served as executive chef while opening Downtown’s Terroni, then managed Gjusta Bakery before returning to Italy in 2017 to open his own restaurant, Mercato Banco e Cucina in Salerno.

Beer and Southern Italian wines from smaller vineyards are available for now, until Antica’s liquor license for a full bar comes through. Reservations are recommended on Open Table. Antica will be open daily from 5 p.m. until midnight.
