A Different Restaurant Named Antico Has Opened Weeks Before Chad Colby’s Project

Plus Roy Choi’s TV show debut, and Macy Gray will sing at a night market

Farley Elliott is the Senior Editor at Eater LA and the author of Los Angeles Street Food: A History From Tamaleros to Taco Trucks. He covers restaurants in every form, from breaking news to the culture, people, and history that surrounds LA's dining landscape.

Naming conventions

Italian restaurant Antico has officially opened in Los Angeles. Except, well, it’s not that one from former Chi Spacca chef Chad Colby, but rather an entirely new restaurant just a couple of miles away. Despite the soon-to-be confusing name, the surprising new East Hollywood cafe actually doesn’t even offer that much Italian food (despite saying so on its sign), instead trading in a menu of acai bowls, poke bowls, smoothies, and salads. There’s no word yet on what, if anything, that means for the Chad Colby’s Antico, one of LA’s most anticipated upcoming restaurants, set to open in early June just east of Larchmont proper, but he is definitely aware that the unaffiliated East Hollywood restaurant exists.

More Sepi’s suspicion

The North Westwood Neighborhood Council is trying to sort out the fallout from the loss of longtime sandwich shop Sepi’s, and could be working on a few solutions to make sure things like that don’t happen again. The Daily Bruin reports that a heated council meeting included accusations of obstruction against Sepi’s relocation efforts, and a call to curb the zoning restrictions that won’t allow the restaurant to reopen anywhere else in Westwood.

Macy performs

Macy Gray is slated to perform at the opening of the Bungalow’s new night market on May 16 in Santa Monica. The free live event is sponsored by KCRW and will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and feature not only live music but food trucks and shopping galore.

Proper time

Santa Monica’s Proper Hotel has an opening date: June 17. However, that timeline doesn’t specifically match up with Jessica Koslow and Gabriella Camara’s planned restaurant inside named Onda; Koslow tells Eater the restaurant will open slightly later.

Getting respect

Robb Report dives deep into California (and the country’s) “growing appreciation for modern Mexican fare,” citing local examples like Broken Spanish, Taco Maria, and chef Enrique Olvera’s coming projects in the Arts District.

Choi’s next play

Roy Choi’s new show Broken Bread had its first public reveal at the Wiltern this month, and soon it’ll be transported over the airways of KCET, Tastemade TV, and PBS SoCal. The show is a collaboration with Tastemade, and spans six half-hour episodes discussing the struggles of LA’s modern food system, while pulling in cameos like mayor Eric Garcetti along the way.

Keep it crunchy

Freedman’s is taking its version of the Crunchwrap Supreme on the road, popping up at the Ace Hotel for one night only on May 22. The rooftop party at Upstairs, the hotel’s outdoor bar, runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is open to the public for anyone who RSVPs.
