Pasadena’s beloved Slaw Dogs has closed up its last location, ending a nearly ten-year run for the hot dog specialist. What started as a small storefront at the northern end of Lake Avenue turned — for a time at least — into a local success story, with locations in Duarte and out at the Village at Westfield Topanga in Woodland Hills. As of yesterday, though, Slaw Dogs was completely done.

Owner Ray Byrne announced the sudden shutter in a notice posted to Instagram, calling his time running the company an “unlikely, incredible time.” Check out the full post below:

Dear friends, the time has come...As i sit here struggling to think of the words to write, I really can't believe that it has been almost TEN years since I served you all that very first dog. It has been my privilege and good fortune to get to share a little bit of myself with you! The Slaw Dogs (1 through 4) have been some of the most challenging and amazing times of my life. From that little run down storefront, on the most nondescript stretch of Lake ave., all the way to the current iteration at The Village in Woodland Hills, it has always been the people that have kept me going and made it all worthwhile. I feel like I can close my eyes and see every face that has stepped through the doors of every location. It is all of you who have inspired me to be able to do this. And to all the crews who have worked along side me, you have molded me into a better version of myself than when I started. Thank you. And to my beautiful angel, Amy, and our boys Hunter and Ronan and to Mama Slaw Dogs, you are my truest anchors throughout this journey and I may not stop sailing, but I promise you that there are always rainbows after every storm. Now it is time to announce that this unlikely, incredible ride has run it's course and it is time to move onward to the next chapter...This Sunday, July 28th, will be our last day of service. I hope our paths may cross and I get to see you all again. Thank you for everything!

Sunday was the final day for Slaw Dogs out in Woodland Hills; the company’s previous flagship off Lake closed earlier this year. It’s unclear what, if anything, Byrne has planned next.

Meanwhile, Pasadena’s other native hot dog son, Dog Haus, continues to thrive in franchise deals across the country. The restaurant group’s busy main hub in Old Pasadena is set to reopen in just a few weeks following a massive renovation, while the company also maintains locations across the Southland.
