Hong Kong Breakfast Royalty Opens All-Day Restaurant in Monterey Park

Welcome to Meanwhile in the SGV, monthly updates from the San Gabriel Valley from Eater’s roving reporter Jim Thurman. This month, one of the area’s longest-serving restaurants closes its doors and Yunnan rice noodles continue to have a moment.


Monterey Park — The original owners of Delicious Food Corner have re-emerged at Alice’s Kitchen with Hong Kong-style breakfast and dinner. The breakfast specials, as well as the owner’s pedigree, have attracted quite a crowd including lines out the door on opening day. 580 E. Garvey Ave.

Monterey Park— Find a lamb- and beef-centric menu at Mei Wei Jin Hai, a Chinese Islamic restaurant run by a cheerful operator. It replaces Meet With Chengdu, a solid Sichuan restaurant that was sadly overlooked. 910 E. Garvey Ave.

San Gabriel— After more than 20 years of serving quality xiao long bao and other Shanghainese fare, Mei Long Village has quietly closed. The restaurant was never quite the same after it changed hands a couple of years ago. 301 W. Valley Blvd., Suite 112.

ArcadiaDagu Rice Noodle has opened in the plaza next to Din Tai Fung. The restaurant has a small menu focused on Yunnan-style rice noodle soups including unique variations of crossing-the-bridge noodles. It replaces Tea Bar Starry, a Taiwanese tea and snack house that opened in 2010. 1108 S. Baldwin Ave.

Rowland Heights — The Alice In Wonderland themed Lin’s Wonderland Tearoom has closed after four years. 18248 E. Gale Ave.

San Gabriel — Yunnan-style rice noodle specialist Mr. Rice has opened its fourth outlet, replacing Ding’s Garden on Valley Boulevard. 400 E. Valley Blvd.

Rowland HeightsP&R Taste, the only restaurant in the area in tserving specialties from the city of Hangzhou like pian’er chuan noodles, has closed after just two years. 18347 Colima Rd.

San Gabriel — Look for more rice noodles and rice noodle rolls at Zi Wei. The dish to try is the curiously named Mr. or Mrs. Mysterious Spicy Shrimp Stir-fry. 1039 E. Valley Blvd., Suite B103.

AlhambraThe Legendary has closed after nearly three years in business. Its replacement is Hi Beef House, a beef-focused skewer hot pot place. The menu is only in Chinese for now, but an English menu will soon be added. 2718 W. Valley Blvd.

San Gabriel — New to Hilton Plaza is Nice 2 Meet U, a skewer hot pot restaurant with a location in Rowland Heights. It replaces Chengdu Laozao, a Chengdu-style hot pot place that opened four years ago. 227 W. Valley Blvd.
