Welcome to Meanwhile in the SGV, monthly updates from the San Gabriel Valley from Eater’s roving reporter Jim Thurman. This month, one of the area’s longest-serving restaurants closes its doors and Yunnan rice noodles continue to have a moment.
Monterey Park — The original owners of Delicious Food Corner have re-emerged at Alice’s Kitchen with Hong Kong-style breakfast and dinner. The breakfast specials, as well as the owner’s pedigree, have attracted quite a crowd including lines out the door on opening day. 580 E. Garvey Ave.
Monterey Park— Find a lamb- and beef-centric menu at Mei Wei Jin Hai, a Chinese Islamic restaurant run by a cheerful operator. It replaces Meet With Chengdu, a solid Sichuan restaurant that was sadly overlooked. 910 E. Garvey Ave.
San Gabriel— After more than 20 years of serving quality xiao long bao and other Shanghainese fare, Mei Long Village has quietly closed. The restaurant was never quite the same after it changed hands a couple of years ago. 301 W. Valley Blvd., Suite 112.
