San Francisco-based Tartine Bakery confirmed that construction is underway for a new Santa Monica location on the corner of Arizona and 20th Street. A spokesperson tells Eater the new cafe and bakery should be open later this year. And in an unusual twist, Tartine Santa Monica will reside at the site of a former funeral home.

Toddrickallen discovered the construction site at the building for Gates, Kingsley & Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors. According to Toddrickallen, the lot was sold after the funeral home closed. A five-story building is in progress with a slot for Tartine, which will be stationed across the street from Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken’s future restaurant Socalo.

Interestingly, this is not the first SoCal restaurant to open at the site of a former funeral home. In 1986, Pasadena’s Holly Street Bar and Grill moved into the Turner & Stevens Mortuary.

When reached for comment, a Tartine representative provided the following statement. “We are under construction and looking to open sometime later this year. We don’t have confirmed hours of operation or menu yet, but we’re excited to open on the Westside.”
