Star pizza pop-up option La Morra is opening a physical location in Silver Lake — well, sort of. The invariably busy weeknight mobile oven crew has secured the now-closed Kettle Black space on Sunset Boulevard for a series of weekly dine-in nights, starting this Thursday.
La Morra first gained notoriety as a popular restaurant back east in Charleston, but in 2017 owners Zach Swemle and Marlee Blodgett shut down there and moved to Los Angeles. The plan at that time was to do a series of pop-ups at bars like Tabula Rasa until finding a permanent home (something Blodgett and Swemle say they’re still after, eventually), but with the success of their mobile operation those plans have not yet materialized. Meanwhile, La Morra continues to be considered one of the city’s best pizza makers, and often sells out early at their weekly pop-ups.
So now comes the Kettle Black nights, which will run inside the restaurant throughout the month of January on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Beer, wine, and cocktails will also be offered during the residency. After January, the Kettle Black space will take on a new menu and interior under its current ownership into a new, unnamed restaurant.
