Last week, Los Angeles County joined a number of other nearby counties across central and southern California in reopening its restaurant dining rooms. The news, first reported by Eater on Thursday night, became official on Friday afternoon, with restaurants told they could allow diners to eat inside as soon as that evening — even before official health and safety guidelines had been provided.
Some restaurants have since reopened, though a weekend of anti-police brutality marches and peaceful Black Lives Matter protests — followed by cumbersome city-by-city curfews — have made for a bumpy restart. Many prominent operators are continuing to keep their dining rooms closed out of a fear for the safety of themselves, their employees, and their diners. Others aren’t fully reopening simply because they weren’t told in advance to prepare, which means staff must be rehired, personal protective equipment sourced, and dining room layouts changed to amplify social distancing. In addition, restaurants must keep occupancy numbers under the mandated 60 percent of total dining capacity.
Those that are reopening now face an uncertain future, even as curfews abated this week. What will dining rooms look like in Los Angeles, once considered the hottest food scene in America, particularly with fewer people, layers of protection, and a summer filled with ongoing economic uncertainty? No one knows for sure, even as everyone tries to decide what to do next.
It would be impossible to keep any reopening list entirely accurate forever. Be sure to check in with your local restaurants directly to figure out what their plans are. See below for restaurants that have, or are in the near future, reopening their dining rooms once again in greater Los Angeles.
