On Tuesday, a Sylmar man was arrested and charged with arson for setting fire to Nancy Silverton’s Mozzaplex. Silverton’s Pizzeria Mozza and Mozza 2 Go were both damaged on May 30, as peaceful protests against police violence and looting took place across the country. Osteria Mozza was mostly undamaged.
The Los Angeles Times reports that suspect Mario Ernesto Alvarado could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The U.S. Attorney’s office allege that Alvarado entered the building, poured flammable liquid onto the ground, and started the fire which prosecutors say caused more than $500,000 in damage. Alvarado was arrested on July 16, and posted $25,000 bail for release.
