It should come as no surprise that Humberto Leon, the multi-hyphenate fashion creative director turned restauranteur, is bringing together smashing collaborations at Chifa — the Eagle Rock Peruvian-Chinese restaurant he opened in November 2020 in partnership with his mother Wendy Leon, sister Ricardina Leon, and brother-in-law John Liu.

Known for exclusive collaborations throughout his fashion career, including ones with Teva, Chloë Sevigny, and Dickies, Humberto is tapping into his Rolodex of famous friends to create limited-edition menu offerings. The latest partnership is with singer-songwriter Solange Knowles on a dish called trinity fried rice. “It’s a take on shrimp fried rice but totally reimagined and brought to a different level,” says Humberto. The dish gets its name from the “holy trinity” of Chinese cooking — ginger, garlic, and scallions — and is inspired by Knowles’s childhood memories of Chinese food takeout in Houston’s Third Ward along with the iconic Cantonese dish typhoon shelter crab. Every serving of trinity fried rice comes topped with crispy garlic bits and fish roe. The month-long special is priced at $21 and debuts this Friday.
Now in its third iteration, the Friends of Chifa series previously featured director Spike Jonze and comedian Ali Wong. Liu created a sopa de wonton for Jonze that featured a classic Chinese wonton soup married with Peruvian aguadito de pollo. And for Wong, Liu took cues from the comedian’s Chinese-Vietnamese heritage to make a Chinese cold noodle slash Vietnamese bun hybrid. “The idea is we’re building these mini-libraries of meals that will come back whenever we feel like it,” said Humberto.
Chifa is open Fridays through Sundays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for takeout, delivery, and outdoor dining. Follow its account on Instagram for the latest news on upcoming food collaborations.
