As the delta variant of the coronavirus continues to race through Los Angeles County, most seriously affecting unvaccinated people, there’s a growing push by some in the restaurant and bar community to move to a vaccinated-only customer requirement. Doing so would mean checking the vaccination status of every diner and drinker (just like checking IDs to make sure everyone at the bar is 21 or older) before serving them; no small feat for a workforce already burnt out from a big statewide reopening, long hours, historically low pay, and occasionally hostile customers.
Still, some feel that going vaccine-only (at least for indoor dining) or requiring proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test is the only way to tamp down on the continued spread of the coronavirus and ensure the safety of those same employees, as the delta variant has proven itself to be capable of spreading to some fully vaccinated people. It’s worth noting that these bars and restaurants are not alone: Some entire regions, most notably New York City, have already begun to mandate being vaccinated for indoor dining (and many other indoor public experiences). Locally, the city of Palm Springs has decided to do the same, per the LA Times.
So which restaurants and bars have started to make the switch? It’s a moving target, with more and more places announcing their plans to go vaccinated-only on social media, but here’s at least most of the places that have made the decision so far. For a look at the first list of bars to go live with vaccination mandates, there’s also a handy lineup of places over at L.A. Taco.
