On Thursday evening, Angry Egret Dinette chef and owner Wes Avila announced that its final day of service will be December 31, 2023. Avila made the announcement via Instagram, marking another LA favorite closing its doors in a stunning year of restaurant closings.
Avila’s Chinatown restaurant was initially a temporary three-month pop-up that evolved into a three-year lease. He converted the Mandarin Plaza space into a mostly daytime operation that was nominated as a finalist for Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation in 2022.
The LA-born Avila has been busy over the last few years, debuting his restaurant Guerrilla Tacos in the Arts District in 2018, Piopiko at the Kyoto Ace Hotel in 2020, and opening Ka’Teen in 2021. Avila stepped away from operations at Guerilla Tacos in 2020. In an interview with L.A. Taco, Avila says he will travel and spend time at his Kyoto restaurant. In a statement to Eater LA, Avila wrote the following via email: “We’re excited for what’s to come in 2024 with new projects on the horizon, including pop-ups in Europe and Asia, and a big new project at home in Los Angeles.”
Heads up, LA
Los Angeles restaurants will start preparing for the deluge of international sporting events coming to the region over the next four years. That goes beyond the anticipated 2028 Olympics, but another NFL Super Bowl in 2027, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball West Region Championship in 2024, the US Women’s Open Championship in 2026, and potentially the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
Soho House membership freeze
Starting in 2024, those seeking a $5,000 per year membership at Soho House will need to look elsewhere. The chain of private clubs will no longer accept new members at its Los Angeles, New York, and London locations, reports CNN.
