Chinatown’s New Bakery Makes Some of the Most Stunning Cakes in LA

It’s always reassuring to see a pandemic-launched business open a permanent space in Los Angeles, and Flouring bakery is the latest to make that leap beginning Saturday, January 13. The Chinatown bakery comes from LA native chef Heather Wong, who will bake cakes in a bistro-like setting with outdoor seating for six.

Wong launched Flouring in 2020 as a pop-up after stints at Bottega Louie, SweetSalt, and most recently as pastry chef at the shuttered Valley bakery Josephine. Her floral citrus shortbread cookies, brownies topped with meringue, s’mores bars, pavlovas, and plenty of cake are available a la carte or by the box with some stunning use of florals per slice. Flouring hours are Friday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A plant-based collab with Crenn and Beran

Tickets are selling out fast for a Crossroads collaboration dinner with San Francisco’s Atelier Crenn chef Dominique Crenn and Dave Beran of Pasjoli in Santa Monica. Along with Crossroad’s chef Tal Ronnen, the three will showcase a French plant-based tasting menu with winter farmers market goods. Dinner at the West Hollywood location is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on January 25 and tickets are $115 per person. Head over to Yelp to nab a reservation.

New experimental tasting menu at Yangban

Yangban chefs Katianna and John Hong are launching an experimental tasting menu-only format on Thursday nights. The Hongs noted customer feedback and demand and will keep the regular a la carte menu on the other evenings.

Suehiro Cafe’s final day

LAist’s Asian American communities reporter Josie Huang spent the final day in Little Tokyo’s Suehiro Cafe, which closed on Tuesday, January 9. The landlord evicted the longtime restaurant to clear the way for a new tenant.

Excuse me, a Pastrami on Pizza Festival?

It’s LA’s first-ever Pastrami on Pizza Festival which goes down on Sunday, January 14. RC Provisions, LOL Caesar’s, Off The Menu, and @PIZZA invited operators like Little Dynamite, Prince Street Pizza, Giamela’s, Ronan, Little Coyote, and Pizzana to put their own spin on pastrami and pizza.
