Chef David LeFevre of M.B. Post, the Arthur J., and Fishing With Dynamite, along with Simms Restaurant Group, is adding another restaurant to their impressive South Bay roster this spring with Attagirl in Hermosa Beach. Attagirl will feature a California Mediterranean menu from Alice Mai, the current chef de cuisine and general manager of Fishing With Dynamite. (The restaurant is not related to a similarly named establishment that opened in Chicago recently.)

Expect coastal Mediterranean influences spanning from southern Spain into Italy and even Greece coming from Attagirl’s kitchen, says Mai. On the menu are handmade and house-extruded pasta, fresh-baked pita, olive oil-dressed focaccia, and classic mezze including hummus and spicy feta.

Taking over the former Dia de Campo space along Hermosa Avenue (the restaurant closed in May 2023 after nine years of serving modern Mexican dishes), Attagirl shares a parking lot with the Japanese Taiwanese izakaya Ryla, which LeFevre and Simms Restaurant Group opened in 2022 with chefs Ray Hayashi and Cynthia Hetlinger. The design of Attagirl’s open dining room will reflect a beachy vibe given its location just a few blocks from the ocean with pops of bright green and terracotta. The space will accommodate around 100 diners with a portion of the room that can be cordoned off for private dining.

Mai grew up in Orange County, studied economics at UCLA, and started her career in real estate before transitioning to cooking. She spent time in the kitchens of the Bazaar, Superba, and Waterloo & City before joining Fishing With Dynamite in 2019. Mai will be a partner in the restaurant with LeFevre and Simms Restaurant Group after putting in nearly five years at Fishing With Dynamite.

The Simms-LeFevre collection of restaurants has invested heavily in Manhattan Beach and now Hermosa Beach, serving likable and trendy menus that appeal to a steady diner base in the oceanside communities.
