HBO’s ‘Insecure’ Restaurant and Bar Locations in LA, Mapped

Issa Rae’s Insecure features unique shoot locations across Los Angeles

As Insecure’s season three wrapped last month, the Los Angeles-based show is a fresh reminder that classic Los Angeles restaurants and bars are just as incredible as the trendy ones. Location scouts work this into the show’s narrative, by deepening the understanding of where the characters live and play. Insecure’s characters are not LA transplants. Each were born and raised in the Southland, and have a long history of indulging throughout the LA landscape.

Insecure’s creator, Issa Rae, produced the popular 2011 web series Awkward Black Girl. Rae spent years in the television development process before developing Insecure in 2013. The show features a primarily African-American cast, with the lead character working in Inglewood, while neighborhoods like View Park, Windsor Hills, and Leimert Park are in the background. Thoughtfully constructed scenes use some of LA’s most understated, familiar, or fashionable establishments to show the lives of everyday Angelenos.

Here is the restaurant and bar guide with scenes from the ‘hella’ hit HBO series, Insecure, presented geographically from north to south.

Warning: There are some hefty spoilers ahead.

A dinner party at the now shuttered Más Malo goes awry during season two’s “Hella Disrespectful.” Housed in a former bank with vaults still intact, Más Malo opened on Seventh Street in 2011. This Mexican restaurant was challenging to recognize during this Insecure episode, but the gilded ceilings for a birthday dinner party were a giveaway. Más Malo used so much in this historic building: a tequila tasting area in a former bank vault, and a basement lounge that looks as if it were decorated in 1972. The restaurant closed both locations in July 2018.
