1. Valerie Echo Park
Touting some of the best seasonal fruit pies in the city, Valerie's crust features a buttery, flakey construction that holds in the fresh fruit nicely. The mini-pies are useful for curbing any overconsumption, if that's desired. Also available at the Grand Central Market location.
2. Huckleberry Cafe & Bakery
Pastry chef Zoe Nathan has taken what is essentially as rich and perfect as chocolate pot de creme and, get this, put it in a buttery pie crust. And we all win. Nathan is about as obsessed with making pies as anyone could be, so order anything available.
3. The Pie Hole
While they sometimes sell classics like double crust apple pie, it's their riffs on American classics that set The Pie Hole apart. Think: swoon-worthy creations like ginger-caramel and grapefruit curd. The maple custard and earl grey are also new classics.
4. The Apple Pan
Apple Pan's signature pie is a 1950s-style, shortening crusted specimen filled with saucy apples. And while butter is better, Apple Pan's pie is served piping hot, with cool vanilla ice cream on the side. The banana cream pie is worthy of all of its accolades, while everything from the cherry, strawberry, and other seasonal pies are certain to be worth the detour. Come early as the good ones sell out almost daily.

Jones on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood seems to do a decent job at most everything except their apple pie. That's because the apple pie is possibly the best thing there. It's served in a fajita pan, and brought, still sizzling, to the table. Do they fry it in butter? Possibly? Hopefully.
6. Pie 'n Burger
Pasadena's answer to Apple Pan's westside hegemony of the old-school pie game, Pie n' Burger has some delectable fruit pies and cream pies that will make one absolutely swoon after a flat-top burger at the counter.
7. Brite Spot Family Restaurant
Brite Spot's pastry program has certainly gotten a nice update, in addition to its interior. Allow us to recommend Patricia's Honey Pie, which is a type of Chess Pie. It's a lot like pecan pie, but without the pecans.
8. simplethings Sandwich & Pie Shop
Strawberry season is coming soon, and simplethings celebrates with pie in all sizes, including their famous cutie pies (tiny, single-sized bites), filled with saucy berries, pillows of whipped cream and a nutty crumble. Check their website for the day's flavors.
9. Republic Of Pie
This popular NoHo shop is where to find a classic slice of lemon meringue, apple, berry, pumpkin or pecan done well.
10. Urth Caffé
The apple pies at Urth Caffe at baked daily and delivered to its various outlets, but the expansive Downtown location might be the easiest place to nab a slice. Crunchy sugar lines the top, which might make it a little too sweet for most, but the texture of the crust is spot on.

Sweet Lady Jane's pies are not for the faint of stomach. This is a monster slice of pie, with a cookie-like crust and miles of filling. The tart cherry, with berries bursting out at the seams, is a clear favorite.
12. Short Cake
The mini-crumble pies at this Farmer's Market stand are sure to brighten anyone's day. Filled with fresh, seasonal fruit and the like, Short Cake does a textbook job of making pies.
13. Baby Blues BBQ
The chess pie at this barbecue joint is about as Southern as one could expect to find in West Hollywood or Venice. Sweet, thick-crusted, and essentially the most buttery thing imaginable, it's best in small forkfuls after the smokey brisket or ribs.
The pies at this cheerful bakery in Century City rotate daily, but the preparations are clean, well-done, and about as pure as one could expect. The key lime pie is a stand out, as well as the pumpkin pie when it's in season.
15. House of Pies
Pretty much as old school as one could get, this humble coffee shop in Los Feliz does pretty unremarkable food that's buoyed by the pretty darn incredible pies, especially the strawberry cream pie. Order that when it's in season.
16. Philippe the Original
The apple pies here are a legendary after-lunch treat. A simple, flakey, buttery crust with a filling that's not too sweet, not too heavy, and just the right thing to finish off a double-dip french dip sandwich.
Being located right next to new competition Short Cake could be tough, but the old-timey feel of Du-Par's is more than enough to make it stand on its own. Cream, fruit, and chocolate pies line the shelves of the outdoor pie takeaway, at a fraction of the price of Short Cake.
