The well-received Fiona on Fairfax is going away

Award-winning pastry chef Nicole Rucker is closing her Fairfax restaurant after just nine short months. The newcomer Fiona opened as a bakery complete with Rucker’s famous pies, cookies, pastries, and breads, and slowly morphed into something even more unique on the savory side thanks to Rucker’s longtime friend, chef Shawn Pham. The final day of service is this Sunday, August 11.

The restaurant was the first to be reviewed by new LA Times co-critic Bill Addison back in January, who said at that time that he was mostly “smitten” with the place, even if the savory menus were still “works in progress.”

Now that work is coming to an end. Rucker sent in a closing statement to Eater earlier this week, citing “consistent lack of business” in their “difficult and personal” decision to close. The full statement can be read in its entirety below.

As for what’s next, Rucker says she’ll be traveling to support her new cookbook Dappled, and that she has some other things in the works down the line. She’s also stepping away from former partners James Starr and Jason Bernstein, who operate several other Fairfax restaurants, including Cofax. They will be taking over the lease on the property, though Starr says he’s not yet ready to share what restaurant project will come next.

In the meantime, Fiona’s run ends this Sunday. The restaurant may pare back its remaining menu in the coming days, but expect some of those signature pies from Rucker before all is said and done.

Here’s Rucker’s statement:

Dear community, friends, and family,

Fiona opened in November of 2018 with the ambition of creating a bakery and restaurant that would serve the kind of food that we got excited about eating. We tried our best to bring you delicious and inspiring meals and treats and aimed to become a mainstay in the Fairfax neighborhood and beyond.

Unfortunately, due to consistent lack of business and despite trying all the things a business tries to draw people to it, we are unable to sustain operating any longer. We have decided to close Fiona effective August 11.

This decision is a difficult and personal one! We’ve turned it over many times and it just seems we are faced with no other choice. Thank you to those who supported us wholeheartedly during our short stay on Fairfax Ave. we have enjoyed getting to know you and loved and appreciated every ounce of enthusiasm for the pies, baguettes, fried chicken sandwiches and bread. It’s really been a true pleasure serving you, wish we could have stayed longer!

On a personal note, I am grateful for the support and hard work of every member of staff who have been here striving to make this project soar. I’d literally never be able to do any of this without them - Shawn, Mariano, Sam, Tamara, Krystle, Sergio, and Ian, and all the staff front and back of house. Thank you for helping us build this and seeing it through to the end.

Jackson Kalb of Jame Enoteca is taking over the prime beachside space

Venice’s longstanding Canal Club is closing this weekend, bringing an end to one of that neighborhood’s more prominent local hangouts. The sister restaurant to also-popular James Beach had been in operation for 20 years, though it did have some down time in 2017 due to a kitchen fire.

Ownership posted a long goodbye notice on Facebook several days ago, saying their time running the restaurant “was a Venice blast.” As for the closure, the post adds:

We wanted to bring back live music and dancing to Venice and have it at Canal Club. It was a long costly process that ultimately did not go through. On top of that, increasing labor and other costs (having two kitchens, a raw - sushi bar and hot kitchen was just too expensive) and a heart attack made us realize that it was time to find a new owner/chef to add their voice, vision and talent to the community.

The final day of service could come as soon as this weekend, according to at least one source, though the Facebook post says that ownership will continue to celebrate on Fridays and Saturdays only through the end of the month.

As for what’s next, Jackson Kalb of Jame Enoteca in El Segundo is taking over. That South Bay restaurant focuses mostly on pastas in a bare-bones strip mall space, so now Kalb will be able to expand his footprint with a much larger dining room as well as an alcohol license. Kalb tells Eater that he does not yet have a name for the new restaurant, but Canal Club has confirmed that he’ll be there, with an eye towards opening in January 2020.

Barragan’s in Glendale | Google Maps

The Burbank location is the last in the chain

Soon enough, there will be only one Barragan’s left in greater Los Angeles. The longstanding big plate Mexican restaurant micro-chain has enjoyed nearly 60 years of success with multiple locations across Echo Park, Glendale, and the Valley, but as of August 15, only one will survive.

In a note passed around to customers this week, the original Barragan family notes that the company’s 38-year-old Glendale location in Central Avenue is not long for this world, saying:

We are retiring our Glendale location after 38 wonderful years... We are grateful to the Glendale community and our longtime customers who have made this journey possible. Four generations of Barragan family and our dedicated staff look forward to seeing you in Burbank and we approach our 60th anniversary.

No official reason for the closure is given, though large, aging across the city have been falling at a rapid pace in recent years, spurred on by real estate redevelopment, changing tastes, and a glut of new competition. Barragan’s famous Echo Park location closed in 2013 for much the same reason, with the family selling the Sunset Boulevard property off to become the Lost Knight and, now, Adamae and attached bar Lowboy.

Barragan’s emerged in the 1960’s to become a prominent chain for casual Mexican and Mexican-American fare in greater Los Angeles, just a generation or two removed from the old so-called “Spanish cafes” that dotted the city, skirting racism and redlining to sell Mexican food to the growing Southland.

The Barragan’s closure notice also states that the company will attempt to relocate as many employees as possible to the Burbank location. The final day of service in Glendale will be August 15.

The owners are retiring, and it’s unclear what’s next

Legendary Highland Park restaurant La Abeja is set to close soon, as owner Rogelio Fonseca say he’ll be selling off the 50-year-old restaurant and attached properties sometime in the near future.

In a sprawling, emotional conversation with newly-installed L.A. Taco editor Javier Cabral, Fonseca says that he always planned to stop working when he hit the age of 65; he’s a month away now. While Fonseca has not yet sold off the business, building, and a few attached properties, he is already taking down some trinkets from the walls and recalling old memories.

Fonseca’s parents moved to the States in the 1950’s and started the restaurant in 1969, and he spent years cleaning the floors before school. Ultimately he grew into ownership himself, and has kept many members of his staff for decades. Once his wife fell ill last year, Fonseca tells the Taco that he began to consider moving on, and is now formalizing plans to sell.

As for the future of the corner restaurant on Figueroa, straddling Cypress Park, no one is quite sure just yet. Cabral writes:

The reality is that due to its high-demand location, that dream future of a revamped La Abeja is outweighed by the current trend of out-of-state money coming into the highly competitive property marketplace in northeast L.A. When I bring up the possibility of an Abeja-less future, Rogelio gets a little antsy...

Still, the legacy of the restaurant remains. Today has been designated “La Abeja Day” by the city of Los Angeles, thanks to local council member Gil Cedillo, and there’s still time (for now) to stop in for chilaquiles and all the other fan favorites from the restaurant.

Duello closed over the weekend

It sure seems that Arts District restaurant Duello has closed down for good. The bar has scraped its social media presence, the phone lines go unanswered, and as of service hours on Saturday night, the security doors out front were rolled up tight.

Duello’s short arrival and apparent departure comes just at the end of a rather long and winding road. Restaurant watchers will also know the space as Simone, a long-anticipated, highly expensive endeavor from Joe Russo of the Marvel Avengers franchise that featured cooking from Manresa alum Jessica Largey. Despite the build-up, the restaurant received heavy criticism before even hitting the half-year mark, leading to Largey’s ouster and a total flip for the property.

Ultimately, Simone’s ownership closed the back dining room and took weeks to reemerge as Duello, the name for the front cocktail bar space only. The restaurant carried a more mellow ethos under chef Jason Beberman, and tried to work a bar menu that included late night eats, but now the gates are down and Yelpers are reporting the restaurant closed after just two-and-a-half months.

The apparent closure of Duello brings and end to one of the wilder sagas within the Los Angeles restaurant scene, involving a powerful and wealthy movie director, celebrity appearances, a star chef talent, and — apparently — a ton of restaurant infighting. It’s unclear what, if anything, is planned for the multi-million dollar Arts District restaurant space.

Despite loads of praise, Khong Ten will close this weekend

Even in the best of times, it can be a struggle for restaurants to stay afloat. That’s a hard lesson being learned yet again by longtime catering chef Kim Vu and partner Don Andes, a veteran operator from The Holloway and Little Joy, as they prepare to close Khong Ten this weekend in West LA. The modern Vietnamese spot lasted under one year.

Vu notified Eater of the upcoming closure just today, saying August 3 will be the restaurant’s final day of service, and that they’ll be working up as much of the regular menu as they have left until then. Vu and Andes first took over the former Freddy Smalls space on Pico Boulevard last summer, before opening in September of 2018. Fresh Off the Boat child actor Hudson Yang was also one of the restaurant’s major backers, and he spent time promoting the place on social media and in the news.

But in today’s saturated dining scene, with lots of competition from nearby Sawtelle, Santa Monica, and beyond, the pushes weren’t enough to keep Khong Ten afloat. Vu tells Eater that the plan is to revamp the space and offer up something new down the line, though it’s unclear just what shape the space will take in the future.

It has been my privilege and good fortune to get to share a little bit of myself with you! The Slaw Dogs (1 through 4) have been some of the most challenging and amazing times of my life. From that little run down storefront, on the most nondescript stretch of Lake ave., all the way to the current iteration at The Village in Woodland Hills, it has always been the people that have kept me going and made it all worthwhile. I feel like I can close my eyes and see every face that has stepped through the doors of every location. It is all of you who have inspired me to be able to do this. And to all the crews who have worked along side me, you have molded me into a better version of myself than when I started. Thank you. And to my beautiful angel, Amy, and our boys Hunter and Ronan and to Mama Slaw Dogs, you are my truest anchors throughout this journey and I may not stop sailing, but I promise you that there are always rainbows after every storm. Now it is time to announce that this unlikely, incredible ride has run it's course and it is time to move onward to the next chapter...This Sunday, July 28th, will be our last day of service. I hope our paths may cross and I get to see you all again. Thank you for everything!

A post shared by The Slaw Dogs (@theslawdogs) on Jul 27, 2019 at 12:00pm PDT

Sunday was the final day for Slaw Dogs out in Woodland Hills; the company’s previous flagship off Lake closed earlier this year. It’s unclear what, if anything, Byrne has planned next.

Meanwhile, Pasadena’s other native hot dog son, Dog Haus, continues to thrive in franchise deals across the country. The restaurant group’s busy main hub in Old Pasadena is set to reopen in just a few weeks following a massive renovation, while the company also maintains locations across the Southland.

Matthew Kaner’s place will have its final night of service on Sunday

Atwater Village dinnertime option Good Measure will close this week, ending a nearly two-year run for the wine-focused restaurant.

Good Measure opened in the summer of 2017 as a place for Eastside drinkers to enjoy pours of international wine from Matthew Kaner, a longtime restaurant wine consultant and co-owner of such places as Bar Covell (which just turned nine), Augustine, and Dead or Alive Bar in Palm Springs. The plan was to use wine as a through-line for an expansive menu that weaved through various wine regions of the world, including Spain, Italy, France, and the United States.

But as even longtime restaurateurs know, Atwater village can be a tricky place to do business. The surrounding single-family homes are mostly price-conscious young families, making places like Hail Mary, Proof Bakery, and Dune big hits, while the corner location of Good Measure has been many different things over the years, including a short-lived ramen restaurant and healthy grocery store in in the recent past.

The final day of service for Good Measure is Sunday, July 14. The restaurant and bar will reopen for service on Wednesday, July 10, marking the final five days before the official weekend closure.
